In contemporary life and language, at times it seems that dwelling forms almost the opposite of its original meaning from old English. Then dwellan suggested being led astray, delaying, tarrying for a while, wandering from the path. Retracing parts of a walk in 1996 over the Knockmealdown Mountains and into the fertile valley beyond them, we found the scattered compound of buildings that were to become our dwelling during this time. In spite of the rains of that early spring, we had loved the quiet isolation and dishevelledness of Ireland.
